About A Million Of Us (AMU) Foundation

The full name/registered name of the foundation is “A Million of Us.” The abbreviation is “AMU.” “A Million of Us” Foundation was established in the year 2018.

“A Million of Us” is a Foundation and not-for-profit, non-sectarian, non-partisan, ethically and morally bound in principles, non-religious, and working to achieve the overall development of children and young people in the society, with Nigeria as a starting point, then the world. It is a human-centred foundation.

“A Million of Us,” is a registered body under the Registration Act governing NGO’s and Foundations in the United States of America (USA).

Homelessness/Displacement represents a persistent, destructive societal presence and characterized by a difficult lifestyle often fraught with danger and discomfort. Statistics suggest that homelessness is escalating rapidly in scope and severity in Nigeria. While causes are many, a scarcity of low‐cost housing is among the largest reasons for homelessness in Nigeria.

Approximately 10.2 million Nigerians in the six states that make up the country’s northeast region require some kind of humanitarian or protection assistance, including 7.7 million people in the three worst affected states (Borno, Adamawa and Yobe). Women and children represent 85 per cent of those in need. Around 60 per cent of these are living with host communities, while the remainder is living in camps or camp-like settings such as schools or government buildings. The vast majority of displaced persons (more than 70 per cent) have moved more than once. Nigeria, with a population of over 237.5 million people, tops the list of the three countries in Africa with the highest population of IDPs.

The truth is that IDPs are often neglected, stigmatized, and already face difficulties in access to basic services. Indigenous women and children face unique challenges and barriers to housing. For those who experience violence, a shelter is often a first step to rebuilding their lives and protecting them from further violence.
We believe we can address the plight of IDPs in the Federal Capital Territory – FCT from protection, human rights, and public health perspective, especially at this point where community infections are on the increase.
